Discover the Tastes of Kerala

Sampling the extraordinary variety of Kerala cuisine is an wonderful experience for food lovers, influenced as it is by tradition, the vegetation, the aquatic wealth and climatic conditions. Coconut grows abundantly in the state, and is used in many dishes. In fact the name Kerala has its origins from the word 'Kera', which means coconut. So Kerala is literally 'the Land of Coconuts'.

Puttu, Idiyappam and Vellayappam are breakfast delicacies made from rice powder. They are usually had with Kadala curry (Chana or Chick Pea curry) and vegetarian dishes like Avial, Olan and Koottu Curry. These are very special to the state, and make abundant use of the wide variety of fresh vegetables found here, and of-course the coconut!

Being a coastal region, Kerala is blessed with variety of seafood and an abundance of fresh water fish too. Karimeen are wonderfully tasty, and the shrimp are simply divine either in curries or simply with garlic butter. Tapioca and fish curry is a favorite dish for the common man. Originally thought of as a 'Poor mans meal', it's now common to find it on the pages of any five star menu worth its salt!! A wide variety of fish curries and fries are also part of the region's cuisine.
